To shoot out a Terminator

The last weeks I’ve been hanging out a lot with Ivo Ninov – a Bulgarian climber, who spent the last 12 years in the Yosemite Valley climbing, high lining and BASE jumping. There he accomplished many impressive things and reached a world class level of big wall climbing skills.  Now he is back in Europe working for Five Ten and he spent the last months here in Bulgaria, where I got the chance to meet him for the first time. Ivo is a very psyched and positive person, really motivated and creative when it comes to climbing, BASE jumping or anything else that can give him fun and adrenaline. Recently he has been working a lot on the idea about creating a quality guidebook for the multipitch climbing in Vratsa, Bulgaria and writing a big article about the climbing in Bulgaria which could be featured in any of the big US climbing magazines. After spending some time with the guy he shared with me his ideas and motivated me to help with my photo skills for the realization of those projects. His first words were “We need good photos. If we don’t have impressive images we have nothing.” I’ve aways wanted to make some impressive multipitch photos but never had the chance so I was easy to be convinced. We decided to join forces and and try to do something that has never been done in Bulgaria – professional multipitch climbing photos on Vratsa Central Wall. Of course we were not alone. Actually all those ideas about the guidebook and the big article will be probably realized by one of our most accomplished alpine and multipitch climbers – Nikolay Petkov, who is running the online climbing guide for Bulgaria www.climbingguidebg.com. So, naturally he had a vital part in the photo shoot – he had to suggest a photogenic place on the wall, guide us to there, and of course pose for the pictures. After a short meeting we decided where exactly to go – the route was called Terminator, a classic 6-pitch 7a on Vratca Central Wall. Everyone packed their stuff and later in the evening we  left for Nikolay’s family house which was 30 minutes away from Vratsa. There were four of us – Ivo, Nikolay, Nikolay’s girlfriend Ely and me. After spending a beautiful night there we got up early in the morning with the idea to catch the morning sun which could give us an attractive light for the photos. Unfortunately there was no morning sun because of the clouds and even if there was we would have missed it anyway because somehow we got too late on top of the wall. The idea was to hike to the top of the wall and rappel down to the crux pitch where the route has its best exposure. After that Nikolay and Ivo climbed the pitch for the photos and Ely was assisting us. Luckily the clouds softened the harsh midday sunlight and I had almost no problems making good photos. It was a quick job, everyone did brilliantly their job and we went off the wall just before a heavy rain poured down. It was hard day, full of emotions and an excellent result in the end. And it was one of those days when the beer is sooo sweet… Nikolay and Ely left for Sofia and Ivo and I decided to stay in Vratsa and have another day or two with climbing, shooting photos and being away from the big city.  The next day we made photos of Bulgaria’s only true free soloist – Gioko, who is a local 60+ years climber, writing the local climbing history for the last 35 year. I hope you will enjoy the photos. Feel free to post any comments.
