Bouldering action photos

The last months the summer in Bulgaria is in full power – it is dead hot and this year – very very humid. Tough times for the local climbers especially if you prefer routes. However, if you are boulderer , there is a place that can comfort you alway from the heat. It is high in the mountain and temperatures there are 10-15 degrees lower than the rest of the country. It is not the perfect conditions because it rains quite often but it is much better than any other place in Bulgaria. Well if you don’t mind the millions biting mosquitoes.

There has been some serious action in Rila Monastery lately and I was there to capture some of it with my camera. I can’t stand the heat so Rila Monastery was my natural choice for climbing in the weekends. Of course I always bring my camera with me so I would not miss the chance to make some good photos.

The first weekend I went up there I was still injured so there was nothing to do but make some photos of the guys having fun. The following images are with Toni Dikov – a very promising young climber that has a serious progress through the grades lately. Here he is pushing hard on Ice Age 7b+, Chupi Kupi 7b+ and Nema Leb 7c:

The next photos are from a very interesting boulder problem – Achko,  a 9 meter highball graded 8a+ with the crux moves on the 7th meter. The first ascent was made by Bulgaria’s most accomplished boulderer Ivaylo Radkov – Fazata. He had tried the moves a few times on top rope a decided to give it a go late in the evening when it was supposed to be cooler and less humid. It was cooler ok, but not less humid. After making a few spectacular falls from the crux move Fazata decided to back out and wait for better conditions. My photos from these tries were not satisfying because it was already very dark. So, early in the next morning we went there and after a short warm up Fazata sent the problem in his first go with me shooting from above. All the spotters were relieved that they won’t have to worry any more, only I was a bit disappointed because I had only one chance to make photos… Here they are:

Rila Monastery is not the only place for bouldering in the summer. Another high quality boulder place is Beli Iskar – with less potential but is only 1 hour drive from Sofia, so it is the perfect solution for a late afternoon and evening bouldering. The following photos are from a rainy afternoon which forced us to go to the only boulder that is possible to climb in the rain. After an hour up hill hike in the heavy rain on a tough terrain we reached the place, but it was very hard to find the motivation for bouldering because we were all soaking wet and frozen. However all the effort to get there was not  in vain. The guys started pushing hard and me, still injured, stood behind the camera. The result was 2 five star problems and some quality photography by me. Here are the photos:

Tina, I am glad that you find this photo stunning :). When you say ‘clear’ I guess you mean in focus. If you want the water to be in focus adjust your camera to a smaller aperture (a higher aperture number – somewhere around f11- f16). This will decrease your camera speed so you might want to use a tripod.

That last photo is absolutely stunning! How did you get the water to be so ‘clear’? Whenever I take pictures of/near water it is always blurry.
